Readiness is one of the biggest myths we tell ourselves.
We convince ourselves that we’ll begin when we have more experience, more confidence, more resources, or more certainty. We create invisible milestones that promise we’ll finally be prepared once we reach them. Yet somehow, those milestones keep moving farther away, and the dream remains exactly where we left it.
The truth is, very few meaningful journeys begin with complete confidence. Most begin with a decision to move forward despite unanswered questions.
When I look back on the moments that changed my life, I don’t remember feeling fearless. I remember feeling hopeful. I remember trusting that every step I took would teach me something the previous step never could. Had I waited until I felt completely prepared, I would have missed opportunities that shaped who I am today.
Growth has always been a better teacher than comfort.
Every entrepreneur launches a business before knowing every challenge they’ll face. Every author writes the first page before knowing exactly how the story will end. Every leader accepts responsibility before they feel they’ve mastered every skill. Progress belongs to people who are willing to learn along the way instead of insisting they know everything before they begin.
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that preparation and procrastination can sometimes look remarkably similar. Both involve planning, researching, and thinking carefully. The difference is that preparation eventually leads to action. Procrastination keeps finding new reasons to delay it.
Ask yourself an honest question.
Are you preparing for your next step, or are you hiding behind preparation because taking the first step feels uncomfortable?
That answer has the power to change everything.
Starting before you’re ready doesn’t mean being careless. It means trusting that you will continue growing as new opportunities, new challenges, and new experiences shape you. Confidence isn’t something you collect before the journey begins. It’s something you build every time you keep a promise to yourself and choose courage over hesitation.
The people you admire didn’t arrive where they are because every detail was perfectly in place. They got there because they refused to let uncertainty become a permanent excuse. They adjusted when plans changed, learned from mistakes, and kept moving even when the path wasn’t completely clear.
Your first attempt doesn’t have to be your best work.
It simply has to be your beginning.
The book doesn’t have to be finished before you write the first chapter. The business doesn’t have to be perfect before you serve your first client. The dream doesn’t have to make sense to everyone else before you give yourself permission to pursue it.
The hardest step is rarely the second or the tenth.
It’s the first one.
The moment you decide that fear will no longer have the final word, everything begins to shift. Doors open that you never would have discovered by standing still. Skills develop because you gave yourself the opportunity to practice. Relationships are built because you were willing to show up before you felt completely qualified.
Don’t allow the pursuit of perfect timing to rob you of meaningful progress.
Your future isn’t waiting for a flawless version of you.
It’s waiting for the version that’s willing to begin.
