How to Build a Vision Board That Actually Works (Not Just Looks Pretty)

If you’ve ever wondered how to make a vision board that actually works, you’re not alone. Every year, thousands of people create vision boards filled with dream homes, thriving businesses, vacations, and inspiring quotes. They spend hours choosing the perfect images, but months later, many of those dreams are still exactly where they started—on the board.

The truth is, vision boarding works, but not for the reason most people think. A vision board isn’t meant to be a collection of beautiful pictures. It’s meant to become a daily reminder of the life you’re intentionally building. The difference isn’t the board itself—it’s what you do after you create it.

The Biggest Mistake People Make with Vision Boards

One of the biggest mistakes I see is that people focus on collecting images instead of committing to action. They fill every inch of the page with things they hope will happen but never stop to ask, “What will I do to make this a reality?”

A vision board should never leave you feeling inspired without also making you feel responsible. Every image should represent a decision, a habit, or a next step. Otherwise, it’s simply decoration.

My Process for Building a Vision Board

When I create a vision board, I don’t start with magazines or Pinterest. I start with prayer and reflection. Before I choose a single image, I ask myself what God is calling me to build, who He’s calling me to become, and how I want my life to impact others.

Once I have clarity, I carefully choose images that represent those goals. But I never stop with the pictures. Every single image is paired with handwritten words that explain what it means and what action it requires from me. Those notes become my daily reminders to stay focused, consistent, and intentional.

Why Writing by Hand Matters

In a digital world, it’s easy to create a vision board on an app or save ideas to Pinterest. While those tools can spark inspiration, they don’t create the same level of intention.

There’s something powerful about writing your vision by hand. When you physically write your goals and place them beside your images, you’re slowing down enough to think deeply about what you’re believing for and what you’ll need to do to get there. That simple act transforms your vision board from a wish list into a personal commitment.

Three Images You’ll Always Find on My Vision Board

One image you’ll almost always find is a microphone. Beside it, I’ve written, “Use my voice to encourage, equip, and serve others with excellence.” It’s a reminder that every opportunity comes with responsibility.

Another is a stack of books. Next to that image, I’ve written, “Keep writing. Finish what you start. Create resources that change lives.” It’s not just about publishing books; it’s about staying faithful to the assignment.

You’ll also find women standing together. Beside that image, I’ve written, “Create opportunities, build community, and help other women rise.” Success has never been just about personal achievement. It’s about making room for others to thrive, too.

Why I Created the Vision Board Workbook

After years of creating vision boards and teaching others how to do the same, I realized many people weren’t struggling with creativity—they were struggling with clarity. That’s why I created the Vision Board Workbook. It doesn’t let you skip straight to cutting and pasting. Instead, it guides you through the questions, reflections, and writing prompts that help you connect every dream with a purpose and every purpose with an action.

A vision board should inspire you, but it should also challenge you. It should remind you every day not only of what you’re believing for but also of who you’re becoming along the way.

If you’re ready to create a vision board that goes beyond beautiful pictures and helps you build a life of purpose and intention, the Vision Board Workbook was created for you.
